I didn’t have to be perfect.
It didn’t require that.
It gave more than it took.
The garden gave me so much more than I ever anticipated.

I stumbled upon The Growing Kindness project via Instagram, and saw gardeners growing these amazing, intricate flowers, full of color in a variety of shapes. I had never seen flowers quite so lovely, and that is the moment I fell in love with dahlias. 
My previous experience with gardening didn’t yield a whole lot. In fact, my first year of gardening, I grew 1 TOMATO. I was so proud! The following year, I decided, to heck with food, I’m going to focus on dahlias. Maybe I’ll be better at that? I shared my excitement in my instagram stories, and my friends were SO supportive. Chantelle sent me a box of tubers, Rachel gifted me the book Discovering Dahlias, and I purchased a few tubers from small flower farms, and impatiently awaited Spring.
Have you ever just thrown yourself into a project without overthinking? The excitement just takes over and you just do it with wild abandon, unsure if it will work out, not worried about being perfect, but doing the best you can? That is growing dahlias for me. SMILING as I dug plots for the tubers

LAUGHING as we slung dirt into the garden

HAPPY as my husband Ed worked beside me to plant and stake dahlias

IN AWE as the tiny tubers grew into towering dahlias with huge blooms

JOYFUL as I watched my kids run through the rows of flowers in wonder of the blooms

HUMBLED as I gave the flowers to strangers, neighbors, family and anyone who needed a little joy

GRATEFUL for the ability to connect with so many people through growing and giving flowers.
I am going on my third year of growing dahlias, and I am painting my way through my garden so that I may share the beauty it has brought me with you.
